The most common type of material used in residential applications Wood or Asphalt shingles. Shingles are made of organic or fiberglass and is coated with asphalt and granulated in a wide array of colors. Steep-slope roofs are built of individual pieces. Steep-slope roofs compose of these three primary parts:
Roof deck – this is the structural substrate and is usually wood such as plywood or oriented strand board
Underlayment- provides short term protection until the roof is installed. It also acts as a second layer of weatherproofing
roof covering- this is the external water shedding material
